I managed 90,000 5-pointed stars using opengl and VBOs in glgraphics and peasycam. it span smoothly using very little cpu for what it was. but add 10,000 more and it slowed to a crawl.

120k spheres will be pushing it though if you want to redraw every frame. amnon's point about point sprites is a good one.
